Booker was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in the predominantly white, affluent town of Harrington Park in Bergen County, New Jersey. His parents, Cary Alfred and Caroly Rose (Jordan) Booker, were among the first black executives at IBM. According to a 2010 article in O, The Oprah Winfrey Magazine, Booker and his family attended a Baptist church in Newark when he was growing up. Booker cites the influence of his parents and the challenges of being one of few blacks in a largely white community during his formative years as contributing to his personal system of ethics. Booker graduated from Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan, where he was a 1986 USA Today All-American football player.
