The company was founded in Liverpool by Richard Costain, a builder from the Isle of Man, in 1865 and was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1933. It has operated in the Middle East since 1935, and in central and southern Africa since 1947.
Costain's activities are organised into four areas: Environment (water, marine & waste), Infrastructure (highways, rail, nuclear & airports), Community (health, education & retail) and Oil, Gas & Process. This replaces the four former divisions that made up the company: Civil Engineering, Building, COGAP & International.
