He became involved with distributed hypertext systems and SGML in 1992. With Tim Berners-Lee he was co-editor of the initial Internet Engineering Task Force's draft specification for HTML. He was principal editor of the HTML 2.0 specification and co-created one of the early HTML validators. He joined World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in 1994 and chaired the W3C Working Group that produced HTML 3.2 and HTML 4.0. Together with Jon Bosak he formed the W3C XML Working Group that created the W3C XML 1.0 Recommendation.
