The middle of five children, he was born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where his grandfather and father were career police officers/detectives and his mother a social worker. His parents were Irish immigrants. A graduate of St. Vincent College (Latrobe, PA), Kelly pursued an MFA at Catholic University (DC).
