An interview with Farrant, conducted in the late 1980s when he was an A level student, was included in the text book Teaching Music by Gary Spruce, published in 1995.
Farrant also plays guitar, bass, keyboards and other musical instruments. Through the 1990s, he frequently played jazz and blues with the groups of Leo Green and Dominic Green.
