He is perhaps best known for his role as college student Ron Johnson, Jr. on the NBC sitcom A Different World. Bell is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Greek-letter fraternity. He pledged into the fraternity through Delta Zeta Chapter in Spring 1982.
Bell attended Syracuse University. He is in a 16-year-long committed relationship with actress Tempestt Bledsoe, who co-starred in the NBC TV comedy The Cosby Show. The couple will appear together in the Fox reality TV series Househusbands of Hollywood, which is scheduled to debut in August 2009.
