The initial study, on extended loan to the Kunstmuseum Basel from the Rudolf Staechelin Family Foundation, has a the black cat in the foreground towards the left. The slightly later version, on extended loan to the Hiroshima Museum of Art, lacks the black cat; it was still visible in the earliest reproduction of the painting, published in 1900, but was later painted over.
