In 1995, through his association with Canadian punk musician Art Bergmann, Dave earned the first of his several Juno Awards. With Genn co-writing much of the material and playing keyboard on a number of the tracks, Bergmann’s What Fresh Hell is This? won the award for "Best Alternative Album".
He was a founding member of and guitarist for Vancouver hardcore veterans DSK (originally Dead Surf Kiss) in the early nineties. At that time he also played with local punk bands Lick the Pole and Sex with Nixon.
