Prior to coaching in the NHL, Tippet was a head coach in the International Hockey League with the Houston Aeros where he coached them to the 1999 Turner Cup where they beat the Orlando Solar Bears, 4–3. That same year, Tippett was named the IHL Coach of the Year when the Aeros received the Fred A. Huber Jr. Memorial Trophy for the league's best regular season record (54–15–13).
