He served as Director of Music Ministry at Tabor Lutheran Church in Branford, Connecticut during the 1990s. He has held several other church music director positions, in Milford, Connecticut, Toledo, Ohio, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In 1992 he was appointed director of the Yale Glee Club, the undergraduate chorus of Yale University. He conducted the group for nine seasons, from 1992-2002. During this time he served as Marshall Bartholomew Professor of Choral Conducting at the Yale School of Music. He led the Glee Club on over a dozen tours, both domestic and international, including a four-week tour of the far east in 1996 and a tour of Scandinavia and Europe in 1999.
