During Life on Mars, Chris is a Detective Constable in service with Manchester and Salford Police's CID under DCI Gene Hunt. Chris is displayed to become close to the protagonist of the programme, DI Sam Tyler, upon his arrival.
Unlike DS Ray Carling, Chris is shown to respect and tries to emulate Sam, although finds himself torn between loyalty to Gene and Sam. Sam is shown to develop Chris' capabilities in an effort to help him overcome his clumsiness and naivety.
Alongside DCI Gene Hunt and DS Ray Carling, Chris transferres from Manchester to London to join the Metropolitan Police.
