Jessica Fletcher comes to the aid of an old friend, Boston reporter, Haskell Drake, who is bedridden in the hospital after suffering a heart attack. Mr. Drake recently wrote up an interview with Jessica, however his heartless publisher, Lamar Bennett, made some sensational changes at Jessica's expense. As Mr. Bennett manages to rack up more enemies, then friends, he collapses upon making a toast at a dinner party. The coroner says cerebral hemorrhage, but Jessica is convinced of murder. The suspects are numerous, and with here dear friend, Mr. Drake, in the hospital, Jessica becomes a "newsman" hot on the trail of the real story behind, who killed Mr. Bennett.
