Senator (and later vice-president) Al Gore refused to seek the nomination due to the fact his son was struck by a car and was undergoing extensive surgery as well as physical therapy.
As with the previous 6 presidential elections, the Democrats lacked a high-profile viable candidate to face an incumbent Republican president or vice president, which resulted in almost certain demise for yet another Democratic nominee. Still, several candidates such as Bill Clinton, Paul Tsongas and Jerry Brown chose to run.
