Originally called "Granville Literary and Theological Institution" Denison University was founded by Ohio Baptist Education Society in 1831. When it finally moved to a hill overlooking the city it changed its name to Denison University, renamed as a means of securing a larger endowment, offering the privilege of naming the institution with a donation of $10,000.
