Dextrorphan (DXO), or more appropriately dextrorphanol, is a psychoactive drug of the morphinan chemical class which acts as a dissociative psychedelic and putative cough suppressant or antitussive. It is the dextro- stereoisomer of morphanol, the levo- halve being levorphanol. Dextrorphanol is also the primary active metabolite of dextromethorphan (DXM).
Dextrorphan acts primarily as an uncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist. It also functions as a sigma receptor agonist and serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI), among other effects. Regarding its analogue dextromethorphan which is relatively weak at the NMDA receptor, dextrorphan is a much more potent ligand in comparison.
Dextrorphan is a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States.
