Armey grew up in rural North Dakota, living in the farming town of Cando. He graduated from Jamestown College and then received a master's degree from the University of North Dakota and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Oklahoma. Armey is a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
