Russell T Davies, celebrated writer of Queer as Folk, The Second Coming and life-long Doctor Who fan, was assigned as head writer and executive producer (or "showrunner") for the series. Other writers for the show included Mark Gatiss, Robert Shearman, Paul Cornell and Steven Moffat, all of whom had written for Doctor Who in various mediums during its absence from television.
