After graduating from Simi Valley High School in Simi Valley, California where he was an All-American, he played in college at UCLA from 1989 to 1992. He still holds the school record for points scored (2,608) which is also the Pac - 10 Conference's all time scoring record, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (formerly known as Lew Alcindor) in his senior year. It should be noted that Alcindor compiled his career record 2325 in only three years from '67-'69 when college freshmen were ineligible, to the four years MacLean played, exceeding Alcindor's three year total by only 283 points. In his senior season, he lead UCLA to the 1992 Elite 8.
