Born on 28 October 1940 in Winnipeg, Newman began his career at CTV where he served as the network’s Washington correspondent from 1972 until 1976. In 1976, he moved to CBC and remained in Washington until 1979. He served two years as the Edmonton correspondent before moving to the parliamentary bureau in 1981. From 1981 to 1993, he was the host of CBC’s This Week in Parliament. In 1989, he began to host the daily Capital Report on the new Newsworld channel. In 1992, he stopped broadcasting for a short period after the sudden death of his only child, Lincoln, during a routine wisdom teeth removal, when his son was home for spring break from Queen’s University. His wife, Audrey Ann, died of breast cancer two-and-a-half years later. He is married to Shannon Day of Edmonton. They live in Ottawa.
