Kennedy served as president of Stanford from 1980 to 1992. From 2000 until 2008, he was editor-in-chief of Science, the prestigious weekly published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) (replaced by Bruce Alberts).
Trained as a biologist, Kennedy has become an expert in environmental problems related to major land-use changes, economically driven alterations in agricultural practice, global climate change and the development of regulatory practices.
