Dr. Doug Murphy is a colleague of series characters J.D. and Elliot Reid. He is an incompetent nervous wreck, who kills nearly every patient he comes into contact with, such as when he gave a patient 500,000 milligrams of morphine; illustrating this, his surname is a direct reference to Murphy's Law. Because of his anxious personality, he is often cannon fodder for the cynical Dr. Kelso and Dr. Cox, the latter of whom once said of him, "he has killed so many people that I'm starting to think that he just might be a government operative", while Dr. Kelso once recalled him pleading with a patient to "stop bleeding, stop bleeding, oh dear God, please stop bleeding". Despite his consistently criminal incompetence, and although he had to repeat his third year of residency, Doug eventually became a fully licensed doctor.
