His father was Onum Barr, a patrician of the empire, and a senator of Siwenna.His brothers were martyr and his sister committed suicide by the actions of a viceroy.Under an alias, Ducem became a gunner with the Imperial Fleet, and eventually managed to get into a position where he could assassinate the Viceroy as revenge.

Ducem Barr has spent considerable time tracking down information about the Foundation. He has successfully retrieved an individual force field generator, the like of which the Empire cannot construct, originally given by Hober Mallow as a bribe. He also knows of Hari Seldon.
