The show starred Elliott Gould as emergency room doctor Howard Sheinfeld, a recently divorced ear, nose, and throat specialist who moonlights at fictional Clark Street Hospital to keep up with his alimony payments. His colleague Dr. Eve Sheridan was played by Marcia Strassman in the pilot, and by Mary McDonnell in the regular series.
The cast also included Conchata Ferrell, Jason Alexander, Lynne Moody, Bruce A. Young (one of the writers of the original play), and George Clooney, who would go on to appear in the similarly titled popular drama ER. The premiere episode also featured Sherman Hemsley as George Jefferson, who was the uncle of Lynne Moody's character, Julie Williams.
