Tolle attended primary schools until the age of 13. From then until the age of 22, he had no formal education. Tolle felt that formal education was a "hostile environment" and preferred to study literature, astronomy and language on his own. He graduated from the University of London but did not complete his doctoral program when he attended Cambridge University. Tolle was a student of literature, languages and philosophy.
