Adding Information to a Topic

There are three ways you can add information to a Freebase topic:

  • Adding or editing the topic description. All topics have an area at the top where you can enter descriptive text about that topic. Many topics already have descriptions that were provided by the original information source, such as Wikipedia, but there are many that also need more descriptive information added to them. Note, however, that if you create a topic and only enter descriptive information without entering structured information in the information fields, this may result in your topic being flagged for deletion. The primary goal of Freebase is to provide structured, database-type information about its topics.
  • Entering property information. All Freebase topics are categorized as certain types of things, such as Person, Musical Artist, Business, etc. Each type has a number of information fields, also known as properties, that provide specific information about that topic. Registered users can enter or edit information in any of these fields.
  • Adding a new type to a topic. Registered users can create new types and add them to topics, or they can add types that already exist. It may be, for example, that you're looking at a topic about a person and notice that some information about them is missing; for example, someone typed as Musical Artist might have recently appeared in a film, so you could add the Film Actor type to his or her topic to add information about their film role. Or, you may have created a type of your own that you want to add to a topic.

Adding or Editing a Description

  1. Click Edit description.
  2. Enter descriptive text for the topic.
  3. Click Save when you're done.

Editing or Entering Information

  1. Below a topic's description you'll see all the types associated with it, and their properties.
  2. Edit any field by clicking edit next to it. When you click edit three icons appear next to the field you're editing.
    • Clicking on the first icon that looks like dots in a square lets you drag that value and place it elsewhere in the list
    • Clicking the up arrow moves that value to the top of a list
    • Clicking the X removes that entry
      • Note that when you want to change an entry, you should remove it and then create a new entry, rather than backspacing or deleting the previous entry and then typing in the new information. This will ensure that your new information is properly saved and displayed.
  3. Click _ empty fields below the name of the type to see which fields are empty. Click edit next to an empty field to enter information.
  4. In some cases, where a property is supposed to link to other topics, the autocomplete feature will attempt to match your entry against an existing topic. If none of the potential matches are the same as your entry, click Create a new ___. This will create a new topic. You can edit the topic after you've saved this property entry by clicking on the topic name.
  5. Click Save.

If you have any questions about what kind of information should be entered for a property, click the ? in the lower left corner; if the type creator has entered any descriptive or hint information for that property, this will let you see it.

Adding a Type

  1. Click Add a Type just below the topic description.
  2. Start typing in the name of the type you want to add. Autocomplete will suggest matches, select the type you want to add from the list.
  3. Enter information in the fields for the type you've added by clicking edit next to the empty fields.
