Muskie was born in Rumford, Maine. His father, Stephen Marciszewski (mar-chih-SHEF-ski), immigrated to the United States in 1901 where his name was changed to Muskie by an immigrations officer when he came through New York's Ellis Island, the main entry facility for immigrants entering the United States at the time. His mother, Josephine Czarnecki, was born in Buffalo, New York, to Polish immigrants. His parents, Roman Catholics, had seven children, of whom six survived.
