Ego was created by Jack Kirby during a phase of creativity where he was fascinated with the universe and the cosmos. After he had created Galactus, he followed up with Ego, the Kree, and The Colonizers. These all contributed to a phase of space age mythology at Marvel comics.
Jeff Parker, who wrote an issue in which Ego attempts to mate with the Earth, described how the idea came to him, saying that "it was so clear to me that I called Nate Cosby and just told it to him, describing things like seeing the Moon by itself in space while Ego assumed Earth was a single mother with a shortie - and he's cool with that." Parker also revealed a deleted scene from this issue, dealing with a joke about Ego and premature ejaculation.
