In the Star Trek fictional universe, the Emergency Medical Hologram or EMH (full name: EMH Program AK-1 Diagnostic and Surgical Subroutine Omega-323) is a holographic program intended to support and augment medical personnel aboard a Starfleet vessel or installation in case of emergency. The EMH was introduced and is most commonly seen on the series Star Trek: Voyager, as played by Robert Picardo. The producers based the idea on the hologram character Moriarty, who achieved self-awareness in The Next Generation, and considered introducing the concept of the EMH in a seventh-season episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but this was not followed up.
