Erik was born in the San Francisco bay area and moved to Washington D.C. in his teens. He graduated from Brown University in 1986 and has since worked in LA, NY and Washington, D.C. He is the son of Leola "Roscoe", a lawyer, and Ron Dellums, the mayor of Oakland and former U.S. Representative from California. Early in his career he had minor appearances in several Spike Lee films, such as She's Gotta Have It and Do the Right Thing.
