Borgnine was born Ermes Effron Borgnino in Hamden, Connecticut, the son of Anna (née Boselli), an Italian countess who immigrated to the US from Carpi (Modena, Italy), and Camillo Borgnino, who immigrated to the US from Ottiglio (Province of Alessandria, Italy).
