Ernst Röhm was born in Munich. He was serving as an Oberleutnant (1st lieutenant) in the 13th Infantry Regiment of the Bavarian Army when World War I began in August 1914. The following month he was seriously wounded in the face in Lorraine, France and carried the scars the rest of his life. An efficient officer, he received the Iron Cross and was promoted to Hauptmann (Captain) before the war's end.
