Evelyn is an aspiring Egyptologist of Egyptian (maternal) and British (paternal) descent working as a librarian in Cairo. She and her brother Jonathan contact Rick O'Connell when they find out that he knows that location of Hamunaptra; however, Rick is in prison and set to be hanged. After kissing her, he promises to take her to Hamunaptra if she helps save his life. She strikes a deal with the warden to keep him from being hanged and Rick, making good on his promise, takes her, Jonathan and the warden to Hamunaptra and it is there that they find the remains of the high priest Imhotep. Evelyn quickly figures out that he was buried alive and was locked in with flesh eating scarabs. At the same time she "borrows" the Book of the Dead from the Egyptologist who is with the Americans, and reads from the book. She translates the Egyptian language and accidentally awakens Imhotep....
