Ustyugov began competing internationally in 2005, at the World Junior Championships, and won first place in both the individual and pursuit events at the 2006 World Junior Championships in Maine. He began competing in adult-level international events soon after. His first top ten finishes at World Cup events came during the 2008/2009 season, and in the following season he won his first world cup races at Pokljuka and Oberhof in December, 2009. Prior to the 2010 Olympics, his best individual finish at a World Championship was 20th place, in 2009, although his team finished in that top ten that year in the relay event.
