Federal Correctional Institution Sheridan is a federal prison operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Sheridan, Oregon, United States. This medium security facility, along with its satellite prison camp and detention center, houses approximately 2000 male inmates. The prison population was the subject of a lawsuit concerning apportionment that reached the Oregon Supreme Court when the 2000 Census erroneously misplaced the prison population from one census tract to another which led to mis-apportionment in the state of Oregon’s legislative districts.
Sheridan, Oregon, began campaigning to be the site of the first federal prison in Oregon in 1981. Then Senator Mark Hatfield and Congressman Les AuCoin worked to help get Sheridan selected as the site for the prison. Federal prison officials began looking at sites around Sheridan to build a proposed $50 million minimum and medium security prison in 1985.
