Mitchell was born in Atlanta, Georgia. After attending Douglass High School, he graduated from the University of Miami, where he was a member of the University of Miami's football team and the Iota Chi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. Two of his Miami teams, which sported both Mitchell and Dwayne Johnson, were dubbed by some sportswriters as playing the "Finessing the Rock" defense, a nickname inspired by the 1984 film classic, Romancing the Stone.
