Fire in the Mist follows Faia Rissedote, a mage residing in a small village. Faia returns to her village and finds almost all of its inhabitants dead from plague. She channels her magic and burns the village to the ground.
This act draws the attention of the Ariss mages, who take Faia to their university. Faia does not fit in; the other mage students there refuse to believe in her talent.
A series of murders occur; young mages with potential. Faia's body is taken over by the murderer, who proceeds to start killing the mages of the university. Faia defeats the murderer and regains her body. She escapes the university, the staff of which still bear a grudge against her, in spite of explanations, and begins to travel, pregnant.
