After completing the tour for their previous album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl stated that the band would take a hiatus from playing music together. He later announced after the Wembley shows that the band would not return to England for a while; not until people really missed them. Soon after, the announcement came for the release of the greatest hits album.
The album was originally scheduled to be released in time for Christmas 2008, but was pushed back for an early 2009 release. In addition to the greatest hits, the album is said to contain four new tracks.
