The neighborhood is home to a mix of middle to upper-class residents, the latter of whom often live in the neighborhood's prestigious Forest Hills Gardens area. Historically, Forest Hills has been home to a large Jewish population, with more than ten synagogues located in the area. The community of Forest Hills was founded in 1906; before that, the area was known as Whitepot.
