In 1972, James joined the cast of ABC Daytime's All My Children playing Kitty Shea Davis and later as Kitty's identical twin sister, Kelly Cole Tyler. She would usually sing songs that she had composed. She stayed on as Kelly until 1980, making sporadic appearances in 1981, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1995 and a special appearance in 2005 for the funeral of Phoebe Tyler Wallingford. In 1980, she was awarded a Daytime Emmy Award for her performance. James appeared once again in 2008 for the memorial service for Myrtle Fargate after portrayer Eileen Herlie died due to complications from pneumonia.
