Kristian Eivind Espedal (born August 7, 1975), better known by his stage name Gaahl, is a Norwegian black metal vocalist, best known as the former frontman of Norwegian bands Gorgoroth and God Seed. Gaahl was born in Sunnfjord in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway, in 1975. He spent his youth living in a small valley called Espedal, in the municipality of Fjaler. Gaahl, along with his family, still retain residences in the valley, although they are fifteen minutes apart from each other, and Gaahl spends much of his time in Bergen.
Gaahl became involved with black metal in 1993, when he co-formed the band Trelldom. During the mid and late 1990s he also become involved with the bands Gaahlskagg (with Gorgoroth live guitarist Skagg) and Sigfader (with Skagg and Kvitrafn).
