Malone works for the London Symphony Orchestra where he runs their youth choir and their community choir. However he is best known for his TV appearances on the BBC2 in such programmes as The Choir and subsequent follow ups such as Boys Don't Sing; all of which involve Gareth being parachuted into a community or school where singing is not a current activity and turning a disparate group into an accomplished choir.
He was educated at Bournemouth School, and studied drama at the University of East Anglia, Norwich where he was in the university choir and composed music for theatre productions. After graduating he did private tuition and then applied for a postgraduate course at The Royal Academy of Music. He passed with distinction in 2005.
