FitzGerald was the leader of Fine Gael between 1977 and 1987. He is the son of Desmond FitzGerald, the first Minister for External Affairs of the nascent Irish state following independence from the United Kingdom in 1922. At present, FitzGerald is the Chancellor of the National University of Ireland and President of the Institute of European Affairs. He is widely considered to have been the most successful leader of the modern Fine Gael party.
