The school was established in 1960 and was significantly expanded to include a second site in the late seventies. The second site is found over a footbridge from the original, which spans the A52/Brian Clough Way. A ballot of parents in 1993 resulted in the school becoming grant-maintained. It has since become a foundation school and has been awarded Beacon School status. In 1994 it became one of the first schools to acquire the Technology College specialisation.
Since 2004 George Spencer has had its own sixth form college. There are three dedicated 6th form buildings and lessons may also take place in the main school buildings. A variety ofAS/A2 level subjects are on offer as well as many other activities. General Studies is taken by all Year 12 students in addition to between three and five AS courses.
