In 2007, Barren County was named the number one rural place to live by Progressive Farmer magazine. Despite the belief that the town was named after Glasgow, Virginia, it was indeed named by a man named John Matthews from Glasgow, Scotland. Glasgow is the principal city of the Glasgow Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Barren and Metcalfe counties.
