Howerton was born in Japan. His father, Glenn Franklin Howerton, Jr., was a fighter pilot. As a result, Howerton grew up in London, South Korea, and Montgomery, Alabama. He graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in Montgomery then went to New School of the Arts in Miami, Florida for two years before attending Juilliard in New York City. While gaining his degree, he worked as a drama teacher during his summers at French Woods Summer Camp in Hancock, NY.
