The school started in 1960 as, Gosforth East Secondary School and later became Gosforth East Middle School, when Northumberland County Council changed to the Three-tier education system in 1973.
In 2003, Gosforth East had a new building erected. This building costing £4 million was officially opened on September 12 2003 by Mr David Bell, who then was Chief Inspector of Schools.

Gosforth East was inspected in 2009. The report said "This is a good and improving school". However the report also notes that there was a few incidents of "name calling" and "bullying". The school received outstanding grades for the attendance of the learners, and the personal development and well-being of the pupils.
