Stephenson described Goto (qua Japanese) as "the most admirable character in the whole book", a statement he made to "put to rest suspicions about [his] motives" regarding racial sensitivity. Given the novel's emphasis on computer science, his name may also be a pun on the programming command goto.
Goto Dengo is related to Gabriel Goto from The Baroque Cycle and Homa Goto from "Jipi and the Paranoid Chip".
