Grant Hill was born in Dallas, Texas. His father, Calvin Hill, was a three-time All-Pro running back for the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys, winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in 1969. His mother, Janet, was a Wellesley College graduate who shared a suite with Hillary Rodham when both were freshmen there. One of her parents was African-American and the other European.
