In 1999, it was added to the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage Sites. Graz was sole Cultural Capital of Europe for 2003.
The city is situated on the Mur river, in the south east of Austria. It is approximately 200 km (120 mi) southwest of Vienna or 2.5 hours by train / 2 hours by car.
