In both Sunni and Shī‘ah sources, it has been narrated that upon the birth of his grandson in 3 AH, Muhammad was ordered by the archangel Gabriel to name him al-Hasan - a name that had not yet been used in the pre-Islāmic period. Muhammad also honoured his grandson by reciting the Adhān in his right ear, the Iqāmah in his left ear, shaved the head of his grandson, and sacrificed a ram for the sake of his birth.
